This course set is designed for new and experienced personnel who are required to work in confined spaces, gas test atmospheres and conduct work activities under the authority of an issued permit to work and within the context and requirements of that permit within the construction, resources and infrastructure industries.
It is designed to teach participants how to identify confined space hazards, work safely within confined spaces according to an issued permit and operate various confined space safety equipment. Finally, this course set applies to individuals who may be required to carry out gas testing of an atmosphere prior to entering a specific area or workspace. These working environments may be hazardous, unpredictable, subject to time pressure, chaotic and expose responders to risk, on land or water, by day or night. Or workplace atmospheres which may include visible and invisible hazards and hazardous surfaces.
Students will demonstrate how to enter, exit and work safely in a confined space according to an issued permit for two scenarios. Participants will also inspect and select appropriate personal protective gear; operate various confined space safety equipment including atmospheric gas testing/monitoring devices and interpret the results to take appropriate action; and conduct routine servicing of all equipment and gear.

MSMPER200 is a nationally recognised unit that teaches you how to understand, comply with and work safely under a permit to work system. Many mine sites, oil and gas facilities and industrial workplaces in WA require workers to hold MSMPER200 before they can carry out work under a confined space entry permit or hot work permit. The combined course at RTS Training includes MSMPER200 alongside RIIWHS202E Enter and Work in Confined Spaces and MSMWHS217 Gas Test Atmospheres, giving you all three qualifications in a single session.
The combined RIIWHS202E, MSMWHS217 and MSMPER200 course at RTS Training is designed for workers in the construction, resources and infrastructure industries who need all three qualifications for site access. It’s commonly required by mine site workers, oil and gas operators, industrial maintenance crews, shutdown and turnaround teams, tank cleaners, and anyone whose employer or site requires confined space entry, atmospheric gas testing and permit to work competencies.
The combined Gas Testing and Confined Space course at RTS Training covers two units — RIIWHS202E and MSMWHS217. The Confined Spaces, Gas Testing and Work in Accordance with a Permit course adds a third unit — MSMPER200 Work in Accordance with an Issued Permit — which is required by many mine sites and industrial employers in WA. If your worksite requires the permit to work qualification, the three-unit course is the option you need.
The combined RIIWHS202E, MSMWHS217 and MSMPER200 course at RTS Training includes self-paced online learning followed by a face-to-face practical assessment at our Osborne Park training centre in Perth. All online learning must be completed before attending the practical session.
No prior experience is required to enrol in the combined RIIWHS202E, MSMWHS217 and MSMPER200 course at RTS Training. You do need to be able to read and interpret safety documentation in English, including gas test results, permit requirements and confined space entry forms. Protective footwear and practical clothing must be worn during the practical assessment.
There is no formal legislated expiry for RIIWHS202E, MSMWHS217 or MSMPER200, however most employers, mine sites and industrial facilities in WA require renewal every two years. Some sites require annual refresher training, particularly for gas testing and permit to work qualifications. It’s important to check with your employer or site-specific requirements, as you may not be permitted to access a worksite if your qualifications are considered lapsed.
